Dr. Harry O. Maier - SPIRIT AT WORK

GODS OF THE MARKETPLACE:

How Inhabitants
of the Roman Empire
Made the Workplace Spiritual

with
DR. HARRY O. MAIER, PROFESSOR OF NEW TESTAMENT STUDIES AT VANCOUVER SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY

The Roman Empire workplace was one of spiritual practice, devotion and belonging.

Ancient guilds were a place for workers to gather over meals, make deals, worship and, at the end of their days, even find a decent burial spot.

Rapid urbanization and the dislocation of rural populations made the ancient workplace a kind of home away from home - and a home for the homeless since tradespeople gave up title to traditional modes of belonging in order to follow the seaways and highways of imperial commerce.

What we can learn about our own workplace (increasingly our own homes away from home) will also help us to understand much of what New Testament authors hope for the Church.
