The Ethics of HELPING PEOPLE IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD with Dr.Ellen Coburn MD
Tuesday April 11 7:15- 8:30am
|
In 2001 Ellen initiated the Mayan Health and Education Project. During her first trip in 2002, she realized that medical care alone was not enough to help this remote mountain region escape an ongoing cycle of poverty, poor health and unemployment.
 |
Many people ask Ellen why she undertakes this work in Guatemala. She says it's because she feels she has been privileged as a Canadian with educational opportunities, health, personal freedom and medical practice in Vancouver.
She sees this project as making a small difference in the world as an acknowledgement of the |
unearned blessings she has received. However, one cannot impose solutions on people - they need to be fully involved in decisions.
Please join us for Ellen's presentation as she expands on her personal experiences working with people in the developing world, and the ethical questions posed.

About Ellen Coburn, M.D.
Ellen Coburn is a physician in General Practice in Vancouver.
In 2001 she initiated the Mayan Health and Education Project. During her first trip in 2002, she realized that medical care alone was not enough to help this remote mountain region escape an ongoing cycle of poverty, poor health and unemployment.
After close consultation with the community, the project expanded its scope to support several projects in Huixoc, a village close to the Mexican border. In between trips, Ellen she raises funds and secures equipment, supplies, and services. This independent project is funded entirely by tax-deductible donations, and by contributions. She will speak after just having returned from her sixth trip to Guatemala.
More information about the project can be found at http://www.mayanproject.org/
