Daniel Vokey - SPIRIT AT WORK

REASONS OF
THE HEART
Timeless Wisdom for our Modern World

with Daniel Vokey

Associate Professor, Philosophy of Education, Dept of Educational Studies, UBC

Date:  Thursday  January 19 2006   12:15 - 1:30pm
Location: Main Floor, Terasen Gas Building
1111 West Georgia (at Thurlow), Vancouver BC

"The heart has reasons that reason does not know." - Blaise Pascal, Philosopher, Scientist & Mathematician

Daniel defines reasons of the heart as the intuitive insights from which our moral commitments flow -- or so he claims, (while confessing that his attraction to this phrase owes more to Antoine de St. Exupery's "The Little Prince"!).

Please join us for lunch as Daniel shares his understanding about how and why attention to our reasons of the heart should be cultivated inside and outside the workplace.

Discussion will be enthusiastically encouraged around how these reasons are connected to inspiration, professional judgment, and conflict resolution. Not to be missed!

About Daniel Vokey

Daniel Vokey is Associate Professor in Philosophy of Education with the Department of Educational Studies in the UBC Faculty of Education. He teaches courses such as professional ethics for educators and spirituality in education.

His research interests include combining eastern with western perspectives on the development of practical wisdom, focusing on the role of experience in the cultivation of intellectual and moral virtues.

Daniel draws not only from his academic background (BA & MA in Religious Studies, MEd in Curriculum & Instruction, PhD in Philosophy of Education), but also from his professional career in adventure-based experiential education, his consulting work with organizations committed to team-based leadership, and his study and practice of Mahayana Buddhism.

Daniel is active in the Shambhala Buddhist community and a founding member of the Vancouver Research Network on Spirituality and Healing.

He was very excited to witness the April 2004 Roundtable Dialogue on Balancing Educating the Mind with Educating the Heart, initiated by H.H. the Dalai Lama, also featuring Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Professor Shirin Ebadi, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Dr. Jo-ann Archibald.

Daniel was also a very enthusiastic participant in "Inner Peace, Active Love", the Interfaith Meditation Retreat held to correspond with the Dalai Lama's recent visit to Vancouver.
