Dr. Gloria McArter THE ETHICS OF MARRIAGE
Tuesday April 10 2007 7:15 - 8:30 am
Ethical behaviour is not usually viewed in the context of marriage. However, ethical behaviour is what responsible and committed couples aspire to for their personal growth and self-respect, for the nourishing and mutual respect of the partnership and, in the larger context, for the sustainable civilized society.
Although marriage takes many different forms, at its core is a primary, social partnership. As with any partnership – be it business or personal – marriage is based on trust. Trust needs to be present in the context of personal values, family customs, attitudes to intimacy, finances, vocational aspirations, and the place of marriage within the larger social community.
Challenges are implicit in the problems characterized by marriage and to avoid them is to hamper growth, to cling to immaturity.
Accepting these marital challenges as learning experiences and showing gratitude for the opportunities that marriage presents is relevant to the meaning and the ethics of marriage.
Gloria will suggest a code of ethics for marriage and how this code, when agreed upon by both partners, can provide a powerful basis for maintaining the integrity of the relationship as it matures.
As always, open discussion will be encouraged.
