"Intentional Travel" as a Road to Spiritual Fulfillment
with Michael McCarthy Journalist, Writer & Videographer
"Intentional travelers" consciously wander the world with the goal of leaving it a better place…
From creating Spare Change, a "homeless newspaper" which sold a million copies – to launching micro-philanthropy projects in poorer countries – to journeying through the mountains of Tibet to rescue abandoned children, Michael McCarthy has lived an unusual spiritual journey.
Michael’s journey of discovery started at an early age when he discovered writers like Jack Keroauc. He was soon "on the road" himself, hitchhiking and hopping freights, wandering the world on a journey of learning. Along the way, he has interviewed many spiritual leaders (like Baba Ram Dass in California), visited temples and pagodas in Asia, and studied belief systems from Christianity to Confucianism.
"All of life is a journey," says Michael. "Intentional travelers consciously wander the world with the goal of meeting other people and trying to leave the world a better place. The goal is to acquire techniques leading to conscious awareness and to share them with other travelers. In the end, the journey is to find our highest self."
In this session, Michael will share stories of some of his amazing global and spiritual adventures.
You don't need to be on an expedition to Borneo; taking the bus to Burnaby is enough. You just have to create the magic that we had as children. It's a state of mind that I create through intentionality and conscious awareness." - Michael McCarthy

About Michael McCarthy:
From 1992-97, Michael was founder and editor of Spare Change, a "homeless newspaper" for which he hired hundreds of street-involved people to tell their stories and sell newspapers on the street. This project sold a million copies, and led to him being given the Ethics in Action Award and profiled on national TV from coast to coast.
Since then, Michael’s writing has appeared in the Vancouver Courier, Vancouver Sun, The Province, North Shore News, Shared Vision, Business in Vancouver and many magazines in the United States. He has also written four books and is currently producing a TV series for and about the Rotary Club.
Michael’s videos about his "intentional travels" include the upcoming Journey to Dolpo, about his recent expedition to an extremely remote region of Nepal. There, with a Tibetan lama, he walked 500 miles over several 20,000-foot passes to rescue abandoned children living in the world’s highest inhabited villages – an adventure in which he was also captured by Maoist guerrillas.
Michael’s personal Web site – www.Intentional-Traveler.com (subtitled Journeys with Purpose and Meaning) – features many similar trips to orphanages, clinics, schools and prisons. His column of the same name is published in Transitions Abroad Magazine, and his short story "Above Crystal Mountain" about his Nepalese trek was just published in Best American Travel Writing 2008. Many of his travel stories also appear in the Vancouver Courier.
