Spirit at Work presents

                     Thursday, May 20, 2010 -- 12:00 - 1:30 p.m.

              Meditation & the Mind:
 The Latest Advances in Neuroscience

                                 with Victor Chan,
                            Founding Director and Trustee,
Vancouver’s Dalai Lama Centre for Peace and Education

How and where do science and spirituality link inside us?

Fitness gyms might exercise our bodies, but what about mental gyms to exercise our minds? That's one of the purposes of meditation. While people have meditated for centuries, only in recent decades have researchers understood how such practices influence the brain and neural pathways.

How does meditation alter our brain function? Join Victor Chan as he outlines the latest advances in neuroscience and research on meditation. Find out how this ancient practice enhances positive thoughts, mental well-being, and compassion.

About our Speaker:

Victor Chan is a Trustee and Founding Director of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education. He is also a board member of the Canadian Research Institute of Spirituality and Healing, based at UBC, and has been a member of the Clinton Global Initiative for the past four years.

He and the Dalai Lama co-wrote Wisdom of Forgiveness: Intimate Conversations and Journeys (Riverhead Books) in 2005, a book that has been translated into 14 languages. Victor chaired the organizing committee responsible for the Dalai Lama’s  visit to Vancouver in 2004. He co-convened a related symposium that featured the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others. And with UBC Professor Pitman Potter, he was instrumental in establishing a Contemporary Tibetan Studies Program at UBC, and was the first Executive Director of that program.

In September 2009, Victor and the Dalai Lama Center hosted the Vancouver Peace Summit which featured five Nobel Laureates. Panelists also included prominent change agents such as Eckhart Tolle, Sir Bob Geldof, Maria Shriver and others.

Victor has shared extensive global travels with the Dalai Lama. And after making numerous treks to Tibet, Victor wrote Tibet Handbook: A Pilgrimage Guide, published in 1994. The book is recognized as the most comprehensive guide to the culture, art, sacred sites and pilgrimage routes of Tibet.
